Al señor Gómez Bergés le sobreviven su esposa  Carmensina Casanova de Gómez ; sus hijos Víctor Osvaldo y Clara, Maeno y Ramón Emilio,  Tania y David, Quilivio y Carolina; sus nietos, bisnietos y demás familiares.

A los 32 años Víctor Gómez Bergés fue ministro de Relaciones Exteriores, en el 1972, convirtiéndose en el más joven del mundo en ocupar un cargo diplomático.

Además, en 1976 fue designado secretario de Estado sin cartera. En 1977 asumió el cargo de secretario de Estado de Finanzas (hoy Ministerio de Hacienda) y en 1978 como secretario de Estado de Industria y Comercio.

El destacado escritor, padre del ex diputado del Partido Revolucionario Dominicano (PRD), Víctor Gómez Casanova, fue ministro de Educación y de Relaciones Exteriores.

Además, fue el único dominicano que se postuló en México y Costa Rica para el cargo de secretaría general de la Organización de los Estados Americanos (OEA).

De acuerdo con un comunicado enviado por sus familiares, no le realizarán honras fúnebres.

A finales de 1978 asumió la Senaduría de Puerto Plata y fue el vocero del Bloque Mayoritario del Senado hasta 1982.
